This is a Success Story shared by Olusola O'sola Fapohunda, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. ----- In early 2010, I went with about four other guys in my department - to visit our level registration officer. We wanted to check our result. Each one of us, was with a paper and a pen. The lecturer in charge asked for our matriculation numbers and one after the other, he was reeling off grades, GPA and CGPA. He eventually got to me and I heard a digit that sounded like I've been shot. God! Me! 2.29. I've earned myself Grade E in some three unit courses and my best course was APH301, which I had a B with a score of 69. There is a phenomenon in Psychology known as FALSE CONSENSUS EFFECT. This effect refers to the tendency to overestimate the extent to which others share our opinions, attributes, emotions, feelings and behaviors. Simply put, it means one thinking or assuming that others feel or think same way as they do. Why am I bringing this up today, or at all? A lot of times we fall prey to this effect. We misjudge and assume certain things to our very detriment and hurt... You can also add value with the little you know. 2. Activity is not necessarily productivity. I did not have to leave my home to organize a class in a posh place and ask people to meet with me there. The internet changed all that. From the comfort of my home I added value to hundreds of people who in turn will add value to others because of what they've learnt. 3. When I first launched my first book, At the River Bank, I had a lot of people that told me Congratulations, the moral support was something else but that Moral support demoralized me and I gave into depression. Do you know why? Only one person purchased my book on the day I launched it. The person that even purchased the book was my friend, Promise Excel. Over 300 congratulations and only one person purchased the book. How does that sound? Have you been in this same situation? I suggested someone to him who was undoubtedly super skilled in what he does. His response was, "He's good BUT I can't deal with his attitude". Then I immediately recommended someone else who does not only have great skill but a great attitude too. You see, in life, great skills will take you to the top but only an excellent attitude that'll keep you there.
