Rhesus Factor and Compatibility

I came across the two write-ups I'll share here, about a month ago. I made some slight changes to them. Thumbs Up to the Writers.

Here's the First one:

Aside knowing your genotype before marriage, there's an important need for one to know her Rhesus factor! Rhesus factor incompatibility is a leading cause of miscarriage. It's not always one's village people or a spiritual something.

Rhesus Factor is an antigen that exists on the surface of the Red blood cells in most people (about 85% of humans). It is also referred to as Rh Factor. People who have the Rh factor have “positive” (+) blood types, such as A+, O+ or B+. They are said to be Rhesus Factor positive (Rh+). Those who have the Rh “negative” (-) blood types, such as A–, O– or AB– are said to be Rhesus factor negative (Rh-). The “+” and “-” in front of the blood group is the Rhesus factor. Generally, we have A+, A–, B+, B–, AB+, AB–, O+ and O–. Rhesus factor is genetic in nature. It is inherited from the parents, emphatically the male parent.

How does Rhesus Factor cause miscarriage?

If a Rh– lady gets pregnant by a man who is also Rh–, there wouldn’t be any problem.
However, if a Rh– lady gets pregnant by a man who is Rh+, there would be a problem especially if the baby inherits the Rh+ from the father (which has a very high probability to happen). We have here what is medically called Rhesus Factor Incompatibility.
During child birth, once the baby’s Rh+ blood comes in contact with the mother's Rh— blood, during delivery, the antibodies against the Rh+ baby's blood are immediately activated by the mother's immune system. The activated antibodies would see the new Rh+ as foreign body or a threat and consequently they would be at alert to attack and get rid of the foreign body.
Unfortunately as such, after this first child birth, the lady would keep having miscarriages because the activated antibodies would see subsequent Rh+ pregnancies as foreign bodies and would keep fighting and taking them off.

Ladies with Rh activated antibodies are said to be Rh sensitized and once these antibodies are activated, they can never be deactivated within the lifetime of the lady. Rh induced antibodies are activated in a Rh— woman by child birth, abortion, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

If a Rh– lady commits an abortion for a Rh+ man and the antibodies are activated in her system, the lady might end up childless throughout her life except if she happens to get married to another man who shares the same Rh– factor. The possibility of a Rh– lady finding a Rh– man is slim as about 85% of human beings are Rh+. This is a very important factor for young ladies who have abortions all in the name of a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.

If you’re a lady with Rh– and your fiance is Rh+, and you haven’t had an abortion for him or any other person, and you don’t want to leave him, then, you need to take note of this:-
In order to prevent the activation of the antibodies, Doctors would give women in this category an injection called Rhogam during and after pregnancy to prevent spontaneous abortion due to Rhesus factor incompatibility. The injection is normally administered 28 weeks into pregnancy, 72 hours after delivery, after ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion. If the injection is not administered and the antibodies are activated, they would never be deactivated again!

In many African cultures up till today, ladies who are so unfortunate to find themselves having serial spontaneous abortions due to Rhesus factor incompatibility are considered witches by some of their family members and some other people. Some of the ladies would accuse their in-laws of being behind their predicament.
So, if you’re a lady with Rh– , you need to be very careful. It might be difficult for you to get a husband with a Rh– because about 85% of human beings are Rh+. So, in order not to find yourself in the aforementioned problem, put all that have been said at the back of your mind and go for genetic counselling. If you have a daughter or a sister with Rh–, counsel them on Rhesus Factor Incompatibility and the dangers lying therein.

It should also be noted that a Rh– person (both man and the lady) cannot receive blood donation from a Rh+ person even if they have the same blood group. The consequence of such blood transfusion is fatal. It would lead to death as the blood would clot. This is due to the incompatibility in their Rhesus factor.

God Bless You all.

Here's the Second one. It shares the same knowledge with the first one. I just decided to have both of them here.

*****

Ifeoma got married in the year 2010. From that time till now, she has been rocked with ten heart breaking miscarriages. She blames the terrible experience on the witches in her village. She doesn't know that she and the Nigerian dysfunctional system is the cause of her predicament. I will tell you how.

Have you ever heard of the word Rhesus factor?

Rh factor is a protein that can be present on the surface of the Red blood cells. People that have the Rh factor are Rh positive (Rh+), while those who do not have the Rh factor are Rh negative (Rh–).

The + and – in front of the blood group is the Rhesus factor. So we have the blood groups as: A+, A–, O+, O–, B+, B–, AB+, and AB–.
Rhesus factor is genetic. It's gotten from the parents emphatically the male parent.

Now that we are clear on what Rh factor is, let's move further to why I said Ifeoma is the cause of her miscarriages.

If the female is Rh positive (A+, B+, O+, AB+), she is safe, but if she is Rhesus negative (A–, B–, AB–, O–), she may not be safe. If the male is Rh–, then the female is safe if she's Rh– too. If the Rh– lady gets pregnant by a man who is Rh+, she isn't safe.
Most people are Rhesus positive. Only very few are Rhesus negative. The possibility for a Rh– lady to get a Rh– man is very slim.

Let's assume Ifeoma is Rh– and during her school days, she aborted a pregnancy and the man who got her pregnant is Rh+. Most likely, her aborted foetus would have been Rh+.
During the abortion, the Rh+ blood of the foetus came in contact with her Rh– blood. That was the beginning of her problem.
Once Rh- blood comes in contact with a Rh+ blood, certain antibodies are activated. These antibodies are activated to stop anything they perceive is a threat from coming into the body and attacking the body. They assumed that the foetus is an unwanted part of the lady's body because it had a different Rhesus factor as that of the lady.
A Rh– lady with activated antibodies would keep having miscarriages. The antibodies would keep fighting and taking off any foetus. The woman might end up childless and if not properly informed might think she is under a demonic oppression.
Ladies with activated antibodies are Rh sensitized, and once these antibodies are activated, it can never be deactivated within the lifetime of the lady.

Antibodies are activated in a Rh– lady by abortion, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage and child birth.

During child birth of a Rh– lady, who got pregnant by a Rh+ man, the child inherits his or her Rhesus factor from the father, so once the baby's Rh+ comes in contact with the lady's Rh- during delivery, the antibodies are immediately activated. After that first child birth, the lady would most likely have miscarriages when trying to have other kids. This is because the activated antibodies would as usual fight off any foreign body and this refers to the opposite Rhesus factor that the foetus would have.

The antibodies can be stopped from being activated by administering an injection known as Rhesus Immunoglobulin to a negative lady. This injection is administered 28 weeks into pregnancy, 72 hours after delivery, after ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or abortion. If it's not administered and the antibodies are activated, it would never be deactivated.

Because our dysfunctional system doesn't promote proper Rhesus factor sensitization, Ifeoma is left helpless after one mistake.

Mothers tell your daughters and sisters. A Rh– lady must be extremely careful. Because of the very small number of Rh– people in the human population. It's extremely rare to find a Rh– man. The possibility to get pregnant by a Rh+ man is high.

A Rh– person (man or lady) cannot receive blood donation from a Rh+ person. It would lead to death as the blood would immediately clog and cake.
