The Betrayal – A Short Story

(Part 1)

"I think my husband is cheating on me" Eukera informs her baby Sister.

"How do you know, or did he confess this himself?" Esther asks as she returns to the sitting room with a tray containing fruits..

She always entertains her Sister this way.

"I know it, I'm not a baby you know. I will find that lady who has the guts to go out with my husband, and when I do.. Oh Lord, Oh Jehovah, She will regret ever being born", Eukera answers as she bites into an apple she had just taken off the tray her sister had brought.

"I will recommend you do not conclude based on just a hunch. If he is really cheating on you, we will find out one day. I personally will get him arrested and dealt with. As for the lady, let me not even say anything".

"Hahahaha, I trust you, but that won't be necessary. I can handle this. Thanks Sis".

Just then, Eukera's phone rings. It's a call from her office. She grabs another apple, hurriedly gives her sister a good bye kiss as she whispers, "See you later, Love" and rushes out...

"You can come out now, she's gone", Esther announces as she enters her bedroom..

"Phew, that was close. This woman will catch us one day", Eukera's husband said as he comes out of the bathroom where he has been hiding since his wife came..

"She won't", Esther replied confidently as she pushes him on the bed, giggling.

Eukera had bearly driven out of her Sister's street when she discovered she had left her phone behind on the sittee as she hurriedly left her Sister's place after receiving that phone call. She put the gear in reverse, turned the car around and headed back to her Sister's house.

(Part 2)

Eukera finally arrived at her Sister's house. She had packed her car, and ran in. She was quite in a hurry. Her Boss had just called her concerning a contract her company was currently bidding for. She had been chasing that contract on behalf of her Company for months, and if she got it, it would be a huge break for her – financially and career wise. They had just called her company requesting they send someone over to the Ministry of Works and give a presentation or lose the contract, so She was kind of in a hurry.
She was excited, it was going to be a wonderful Christmas gift for her.

She got to her sister's flat and knocked, but no reply. She gave the door a slight push after turning the door handle. The door wasn't locked. Obviously, Esther hadn't locked the door after her when she left earlier. Old habits die hard, She thought.
She went straight in. Just as She had thought, her phone was there on the sittee. She picked it up and was about heading out. Then, She stopped and called to her Sister,

"Esther come and lock your door, it's not safe to leave your door open like this".

There was no reply,

"Esther!!!"
No reply again..

She became apprehensive. Hope all was well, She thought. She went to the kitchen first, grabbed a kitchen knife from the knife stand. She was becoming more afraid by the minute. Too much Friday late night horror movies has a way of making one paranoid; the security situation in the country didn't help matters. She clutched the knife and headed towards her Sister's bedroom.

She began to hear muffled noises coming from the bedroom. She grew more apprehensive. Was Esther under attack, or was she praying? All She could think about was her Sister's safety. She clutched the knife tighter, it's sharp end pointing away from her..

She pushed the door open. A man was on top of her Sister. They were both naked. Immediately, She took in the scenario. The muffled sounds She heard earlier, it all made sense now. She understood what was going on and blood immediately rushed to her face; Esther was with a Man, she blushed embarrassingly.
"Gush! Always lock your doors for Pete's sake" She shouted in her head.

She relaxed her grip on the knife.
Esther was safe, She wasn't under any threat. She was just under somebody.

Eukera chuckled silently, and began to beat a retreat out of the room, when suddenly, She stepped on a stuffed teddy. She cursed. "Esther and teddies", She thought, as the teddy began to sing.

"I am Panda, and I love You"

The Man turned. The room was dimly lit, but She could never forget that face – his face – her husband's face.

She froze. He was supposed to be in Canada on a "business trip".
His gaze met hers. He saw the knife in her hand. He froze.

Esther raised her head. She had heard the teddy's song. She saw her Elder Sister and the knife. It was too ambiguous to be missed. She froze.. For seconds nobody spoke, nobody moved..

Fear, Anger, Tension, Rage, Guilt..

Everybody with their own emotions right now.

Eukera raised the knife up once more, it's edge shone in the partial darkness. She clutched her teeth, her forehead furrowed in anger. She felt like her heart was about to burst.

Her husband, no, scratch that, She already knew he was cheating on her, but, HER SISTER, HER BABY SISTER, her flesh and blood, with her husband. This was too much for her.

It felt like a thousand knives were lodged in her heart. The pain of the betrayal surged through her body. She closed her eyes for a mini second. The betrayal – She wished it was someone else, not Esther. She wished she was dreaming, She wished She hadn't forgotten her phone..

Tears escaped her eyes, and ran down her face, caressing her face as they slid down.
She knew at that moment that someone was going to end up dead in the few minutes to come.. She knew. She tightened her grip on the knife..

Yesterday (on the day this was written), I watched Pastor Chris Oyakilome live as he preached. He used his iPad to read out scriptures. Later in the day, I saw a post on Instagram, and one guy like that insulted Pastor Chris for using iPad, instead of his Bible. I laughed at the man's ignorance. I remember an Uncle of mine was invited to a Church. He went there with his iPad, and someone asked him: "Sir, where is your Bible?” He showed him his 10.1 inches Pad. “But Sir,” he said, “This is not a Bible, this is iPad, you need to carry your Bible. You're not a good preacher, if you don't preach with your Bible," one of the pastors said. Now this is my point: Before the advent of printing press, the scriptures were originally written on a scroll! The ten commandments were written on a stone! Not on a Book called “Holy Book”. Passing by a church over the weekend, my thoughts revolved about a noticeable trend that have stayed in Nigeria, I believe for about a decade or so. You must have observed same. Churches in recent years now use Religious broadcasting (which is broadcasting by religious organizations, usually with a religious message) to conduct LIVE services. So, a head quarter church in any part of the country can easily broadcast to any of their satellite churches, and you see people in this satellite churches agreeing and seeing visible results. Several years ago, people will never try that. They will wonder why you should be looking at somebody in a box, and be dancing, singing and even believe same for miracles. What foolishness? I was nothing special. I get that. I come from humble beginnings. Zero silver spoon in my mouth. In school, I didn’t fit in. Wasn’t given much of a chance.
