This is a Success Story shared by Olusola O'sola Fapohunda, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. ----- In early 2010, I went with about four other guys in my department - to visit our level registration officer. We wanted to check our result. Each one of us, was with a paper and a pen. The lecturer in charge asked for our matriculation numbers and one after the other, he was reeling off grades, GPA and CGPA. A lot of us have become used to using salt to kill earthworms when we encounter any in our houses. I've thought about this for a while now, but I recently decided to check it up and I'll share what I learnt about the science. Before that, I'll share some points about earthworms: - They are in the lumbricus genus, there are various species of earthworms, but the common earthworm's scientific name is lumbricus terrestris - Their digestive system runs through the length of their skin - Earthworms respire through their skin - They are hermaphrodites (each one carries both male and female sex organs) - They lack either an internal skeleton or exoskeleton , but maintain their structure with fluid-filled coelom chambers that function as a hydrostatic skeleton. Our present society is a mixture of different persons of different family values. That's one of the major reasons why people have different understanding of an issue or situation. One from a family with high personal and moral values may not agree with the other who has his or her own values, and who feels they are justified and right. You see situations where people can't relate because of their parallel opinions and beliefs which are antagonist to each other. You see situations where people "mind their business" because they feel that the actions and activities of other persons, has no significant effect on them. Many people expect life to be easy. Even as a Christian, there is no crown without a cross. Many people wish they can just wish suffering away, deny it exists or drink it away. Suffering is how the spirit of man grows, how it learns to discipline itself from the incessant demands of the wayward flesh. Suffering people are growing people. But does that mean we should desire suffering? No, we should not desire suffering but neither should we resist it. Because what we resist persists. We should not try to hide from suffering. Like a bully, we stand up to it, pull it in the beard and find out that it was just an attachment meant to scare us. Suffering is not bad in itself and will only cease when you have learned your lesson from it. Adversity is the road map to prosperity just as failure is the step stones to Success. You can either carry the pains of your past as excess baggage or convert it into a fuel of love to propel you into your greatness. The choice is yours, because the past is gone and cannot be undone. However, the meanings we ascribe to the tragedies of our past is hardwired into our subconscious and dictates most of our thought processes and decision-making in the present. The way we interpret those events can be rewired to give positive meanings to our pain. We must see those ugly experiences as part of a grand design that is intended to bring out the beauty in us.
