Success Story: Sir James Dyson

Sir James Dyson is a British inventor, industrial designer and the founder of Dyson company. He's presently 70 years old (born in 1947). He was involved in some inventions including the sea truck in 1970, the Ballbarrow (his first original invention) and the Wheelboat, which can travel on both land and water.

James Dyson is best know for inventing the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner, the world's first bagless vacuum cleaner. Before it's invention, the hoover vacuum was in use but this vacuum had a dust bag which get clogged with dust and this affects its performance, as it losses suction. It took over 5,000 trials and failures and about 5 years (with support from his wife's salary as an art teacher) before Dyson succeeded. When he finally did at the age of 36, no distributor in the United Kingdom wanted to market his product. He had to market his product in Japan (1983) where it was awarded an industrial award.

Three years later (1986), Dyson obtained his first US patent on his invention, but even with that, he couldn't get marketers in his own country, but he never gave up. He formed his own company. His breakthrough came in 1993, more than ten years after He had the initial idea. Through TV advertising, he was able to let people know that his product doesn't require them continually purchasing replacement bags (which was valued at about £100 million annually in the United Kingdom market). Not quite long, his product became a fast seller.

Today, Dyson is worth over £7 billion.

Lesson: You have the ideas in you to develop and create something different and of great benefit to the world. Sometimes those ideas come when you look around you and see difficulties and challenges and when your mind tells you 'there are better ways of achieving this'. You just have to put your mind to action, and when you come up with your solution, don't give up on it when it doesn't seem to be accepted or recognized, keep fighting, working and improving on it. One day, the world will thank you for it.
